The Book of Genesis 18 Verses

Genesis 13

Abram and Lot Part Ways
Chapter 13 Overview · 18 Verses

1So Abram went up out of Egypt into the Negev—he and his wife and all his possessions—and Lot was with him. 2And Abram had become extremely wealthy in livestock and silver and gold.

3From the Negev he journeyed from place to place toward Bethel, until he came to the place between Bethel and Ai where his tent had formerly been pitched, 4to the site where he had built the altar. And there Abram called on the name of YAHWEH.

Genesis 13:4 Commentary

Abram Returns to Bethel to Call on YAHWEH:

Abram returns from Egypt to the altar between Bethel and Ai. Over a thousand years later, the prophet Joel would state it plainly: “everyone who calls on the name of YAHWEH will be saved” (Joel 2:32). Calling on the name of YAHWEH here is Abram rebuilding what his recent failure in Egypt broke — returning to covenant obedience and acknowledging the One who spared him when he didn’t deserve it.

5Now Lot, who was traveling with Abram, also had flocks and herds and tents. 6But the land was unable to support both of them while they stayed together, for they had so many possessions that they were unable to coexist. 7And there was discord between the herdsmen of Abram and the herdsmen of Lot. (At that time the Canaanites and the Perizzites were also living in the land.)

8So Abram said to Lot, “Please let there be no contention between you and me, or between your herdsmen and my herdsmen. After all, we are kinsmen. 9Is not the whole land before you? Now separate yourself from me. If you go to the left, I will go to the right; if you go to the right, I will go to the left.”

Genesis 13:8–9 Commentary

Abram Waived His Right to the Best Land:

As the elder patriarch and likely Lot’s foster father after Haran died two chapters earlier in Genesis 11:28, Abram possessed every unilateral right to pull rank and claim the best pastureland for himself. Instead, he graciously yields first choice to his nephew. This was active faith resting in YAHWEH rather than grasping for physical advantage.

Lot Pitches His Tent Toward Sodom

10And Lot looked out and saw that the whole plain of the Jordan, all the way to Zoar, was well watered like the garden of YAHWEH, like the land of Egypt. (This was before YAHWEH destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah.) 11So Lot chose the whole plain of the Jordan for himself and set out toward the east. And Abram and Lot parted company.

12Abram lived in the land of Canaan, but Lot settled in the cities of the plain and pitched his tent toward Sodom. 13But the men of Sodom were wicked, sinning greatly against YAHWEH.

Genesis 13:10–13 Commentary

Lot Chose Prosperity Over Spiritual Safety:

Lot looks toward the well-watered Jordan plain “like the garden of YAHWEH” and pitches his tent toward Sodom — and Genesis 13:13 states plainly that “the men of Sodom were wicked, sinning greatly against YAHWEH.” Lot looked with his eyes and made a purely commercial decision, setting his family on a collision course with total ruin.

From Pitching Toward Sodom to Ruling Inside It:

Notice the progressive trap: here in Genesis 13:12, Lot pitches his tent toward Sodom; coming up shortly in Genesis 14:12, he will be living inside it; and in a future account in Genesis 19:1, he will be an established city elder sitting at the gate! Sin never lets you stay a spectator. It draws you from looking, to pitching toward it, to moving in, to taking public office in it. Lot began with a commercial compromise and ended up losing his wife, his wealth, and his dignity in a smoky cave.

Lot Chose by Sight, the Same Way Eve Did:

When Lot surveys the Jordan valley in Genesis 13:10, his eyes lock onto prime real estate: well-watered everywhere, “like the garden of YAHWEH,” deliberately echoing the lush paradise of Eden. But outward prosperity stripped of righteousness is a deadly trap. Sodom looked like paradise on the surface, but underneath the lush green grass was a moral sewer already ticking toward catastrophic judgment.

YAHWEH Renews the Land Promise to Abram

14After Lot had departed, YAHWEH said to Abram, “Now lift up your eyes from the place where you are, and look to the north and south and east and west, 15for all the land that you see, I will give to you and your offspring forever.

16I will make your offspring like the dust of the earth, so that if one could count the dust of the earth, then your offspring could be counted. 17Get up and walk around the land, through its length and breadth, for I will give it to you.”

18So Abram moved his tent and went to live near the Oaks of Mamre at Hebron, where he built an altar to YAHWEH.

Genesis 13:14–18 Commentary

Surrendering in Faith — God Hands Abram the Map:

Once Lot is gone, God tells Abram to look in every direction — north, south, east, west — and promises him all of it, with offspring as numerous as the dust of the earth. Abram moves his tent to the oaks of Mamre near Hebron and builds an altar to YAHWEH there — his third distinct altar in the land of Canaan (following Shechem and Bethel), permanently establishing Hebron as a center of covenant worship. He gave Lot first choice of the physical pastures, and God responded by handing Abram the entire map. Every time the patriarch yields human advantage in obedience, the Almighty repays him with an eternal inheritance far greater than what was laid down.
